Free Speech Zone Productions is a collective of young composers dedicated to presenting concerts of compelling new music to broad audiences in venues ranging from clubs to concert halls. Founders Judd Greenstein, David T. Little and Missy Mazzoli are united in their belief that music can inform, provoke, and inspire change, and seek to present music that speaks directly to the human experience in an era marked by anger and fear. In November of 2005 they joined forces with NOW Ensemble and Newspeak on the Free Speech Zone Tour and presented concerts of politically-themed music in New York, New Haven and Boston. Check out audio clips from that tour here, and keep visiting this site for information about upcoming events.
Filmmaker Stephen Taylor followed the composers and performers of Free Speech Zone Productions during their tour in November of 2005, and documented the shows, the preparations, and the artists' ideas and motivations behind the music. ~ PRESS FROM THE FREE SPEECH TOUR 2005 ~
The concert was a successful political event, as well as a very thought-provoking musical event. The participants (organizers, composers, and performers) demonstrated that classical musicians don't always have to sit sequestered in their studios and concert halls that they can show how they, too, are people who care about non-musical matters.

As to the performances, to say that they were completely masterly (and, in some cases masterful) technically and wonderfully powerful and expressive would be to slander them by using faint praise. It was the kind of playing which was so concentrated and focused that it could melt through steel.

Free Speech Productions is a collaboration among three gifted composers Judd Greenstein, David T. Little, and Missy Mazzoli who are eager to bring a new political charge to a generally apolitical new-music scene.
